look at Eureka via the Eureka
Webcam
Eureka
is located in the Tobacco Valley along U.S. Highway 93.
The valley reaches from Stillwater State Park north to the Canadian
Border; and from the Whitefish Range of the Rocky Mountains
west to Lake Koocanusa Reservoir and the Purcell Mountains of
the Kootenai National Forest. The collection of communities
that are served by the commercial hub of Eureka, Montana include:
Rexford, Fortine and Trego.
Eureka was known
as the Tobacco Plains, originally home to the Kootenai Indians.
The northern section of U.S. Highway 93 was originally an Indian
trail and was later used by fur traders and pack trains for
travel between Missoula and Vancouver, B.C. David Thompson was
the first white man to see the area in 1808. Homesteaders began
to come in the 1880s. The first buildings were built on the
banks of the Tobacco River.
This wide, grassy
valley nestled between two mountain ranges boasts Montana's
mildest climate and most diverse and spectacular scenery.
From native short-grass prairies to high country forests, the
area abounds with deer, elk, moose, bird life and wildflowers.
Visitors to the Tobacco Valley enjoy outstanding recreation
opportunities. Get away from the hustle and bustle of
the city and experience life as it is meant to be.
